The joint leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in the South-West has commended President Bola Tinubu for the ongoing construction of major road projects across the region.

The commendation is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a three-day retreat held between July 16 and July 18 in Ibadan.

The communiqué, signed by Dr Abimbola Oyetunde, Deputy National President of NUJ, and Mrs Aderonke Afebioye-Samo, Vice President of NUJ, Zone B, was made available to journalists on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the retreat, themed, “Collaboration, Capacity and Sustainability for the Future of Journalism,” was co-hosted by the Oyo and Ogun State Councils of NUJ.

The union leaders urged contractors handling the ongoing road projects in the region to intensify work and ensure timely completion.

According to them, the infrastructure, when completed, would help to the boost the economy and improve transportation across the region.

The union leaders also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to begin negotiations for a review of the N70,000 national minimum wage.

It noted that prevailing economic realities and rising inflation had significantly eroded the purchasing power of workers, making an upward review of the current minimum wage both necessary and timely.

The NUJ and NAWOJ also applauded the peaceful conduct of the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election and urged stakeholders to replicate the same peaceful, credible and hitch-free process during the forthcoming Osun poll.

NAN also reports that the retreat attracted delegates from the six South-West states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun Ondo and Ekiti, including national officers, zonal leaders, state chairmen, chairpersons, secretaries and members of the State Working Committees of both NUJ and NAWOJ.
