Ogun dismisses terror invasion rumours, assures residents of safety

The Ogun State Government has dismissed as unfounded reports of a planned invasion by terrorists and criminal groups, assuring residents that the state remains safe and secure.

The Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Gov. Dapo Abiodun, Mr Kayode Akinmade, made this known in a statement in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Akinmade explained that available intelligence from security agencies indicated that Ogun remained peaceful and secure, urging residents not to be misled by rumours designed to create panic.

He noted that reports circulating on social media claiming imminent attacks by killer herders, insurgents and other criminal elements were unfounded.

According to him, security agencies across the state remains on high alert and have put adequate measures in place to prevent any threat to public peace and order.

“There is no imminent threat of invasion by any terrorist group. Security agencies and operatives across the state are vigilant and prepared,” he said.

He condemned attempts to use security incidents occurring elsewhere in the country to spread fear in Ogun State, saying such actions are irresponsible and only serve to cause unwarranted anxiety among residents.

Akinmade disclosed that some individuals linked to the spread of the false reports had been apprehended and are facing prosecution.

He said the action would serve as a deterrent to others seeking to spread misinformation, incite panic or disrupt public peace.

Akinmade stated that the government would continue to collaborate with security agencies to ensure offenders were held accountable.

He noted that strong cooperation among security agencies, traditional institutions, local authorities and community stakeholders had strengthened intelligence gathering and rapid response mechanisms.

According to him, the state government is working closely with security agencies to enhance security strategies tailored to Ogun’s peculiar needs.

The special adviser said Abiodun had continued to prioritise the protection of lives and property through investments in security infrastructure and support for security agencies.

He assured residents that the government remained proactive in security management and constantly reviewed intelligence reports and security developments nationwide.

He advised residents to disregard unverified reports and avoid spreading rumours capable of causing panic, saying Ogun remained safe, secure and open for lawful business and socio-economic activities.
