Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has urged media professionals to promote developmental journalism for the progress of the state.

The governor, represented by Mr Peter Ahemba,  his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, made the call during a congratulatory visit to new leadership of the Nasarawa State Correspondents’ Chapel on Monday in Lafia.

He said journalists must continue to play their role as watchdogs and drivers of development in the society.

The governor commended members of the chapel for conducting a peaceful, transparent and credible election, describing it as a model for others to emulate.

“This visit is to formally congratulate you and members of your executive for conducting a peaceful, transparent, free and fair election. We are happy with the outcome and urges politicians to emulate the chapel’s example for the good of our democracy,” he said.

Sule emphasised that journalists could contribute significantly to societal development through effective reportage and commitment to developmental journalism.

He commended the immediate past chairman of the chapel, Mr Isaac Ukpoju, for his leadership in stabilising the chapel, and urged the new executives to build on his achievements.

The governor further reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing an enabling environment and necessary logistics for journalists to operate effectively in the state.

Responding, the chairman of the chapel, Mr Abubakar Abdullahi, appreciated the visit and government’s sustained support to journalists in the state.

“We are honoured by this visit and appreciate the governor for always recognising and supporting us. We remain committed to partnering with the government in promoting good governance, peace and development in the state,” Abdullahi said.

He also pledged that members of the chapel would continue to uphold the ethics of the journalism profession in the discharge of their duties.
