The Lagos State Government has announced plans to install 3,000 electronic police (e-police) and speed limit cameras across the city to bolster traffic law enforcement and improve road safety.
During a recent broadcast of Lagos Transport Trends and Perspectives on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, the Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), outlined the initiative aimed at curbing traffic violations and ensuring adherence to speed limits.
Fashola noted that several speed limit cameras have been deployed at critical locations, including the Alapere-Ogudu Road, where speed limits are set at 80 km/h for vehicles heading towards Alausa and 60 km/h for those heading to Iyana Oworo.
Additionally, cameras have been installed along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, enforcing a maximum speed of 60 km/h.
Beyond speed monitoring, e-police cameras are operational at key intersections, such as Allen Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road in Ikeja, targeting violations including red-light running.
To ensure compliance, Fashola advised motorists to heed warning signs strategically placed at these locations.
He also detailed the penalties for infractions, stating that drivers caught exceeding speed limits would incur a fine of ₦50,000.
However, motorists who believe they have been unfairly fined can contest the penalty by providing supporting evidence.
This initiative is part of Lagos State’s ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety and reducing traffic-related incidents.
