In a compelling address at the fourth Annual Ramadan Lecture held in Mushin, Lagos, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, called on religious leaders to educate their followers about the responsible use of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The event, organized by Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Moses Oluwatoyin Fayinka, was dedicated to honouring the late Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat. Hamzat emphasized the importance of merging faith with the advancements of modern technology.
He urged religious leaders to convey to their congregations that while embracing AI can broaden horizons, it should not compromise their spiritual integrity or connection with God. “Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool, but we must help our communities understand its implications on humanity,” Hamzat stated. He called on both Islamic and Christian leaders to guide their members in using technology in ways that align with their religious values.
Highlighting the responsibility of clerics, he said, “It is essential to find ways to coexist with technology while upholding our religious principles. We must instil in our youth the notion that we are not governed by machines; rather, our lives are ultimately directed by the Almighty.”
The Deputy Governor’s remarks reflect a growing concern among leaders about balancing technological advancement with spiritual well-being, especially as AI continues to evolve rapidly. His call for religious guidance in this new era resonates with a need for ethical considerations in the face of innovation. The event concluded with prayers and discussions aimed at fostering a community that embraces technological progress while remaining anchored in faith.
