Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Canada should be absorbed into the United States, citing the country’s financial dependence on American support. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, February 3, 2025. Trump claimed that the U.S. spends hundreds of billions of dollars subsidizing Canada without justification.
Trump argued that the United States does not require Canadian resources, pointing to its own vast energy supplies, manufacturing capabilities, and lumber. He asserted that without U.S. support, Canada would struggle to maintain its status as a viable nation.
The former president proposed that making Canada the 51st state would yield several advantages, including lower taxes, enhanced military protection, and the elimination of tariffs. In his post, he stated, “We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada. Why?
There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited energy, should make our own cars, and have more lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country. Harsh but true!”
He continued, “Therefore, Canada should become our cherished 51st state. Much lower taxes and far better military protection for the people of Canada — and no tariffs!”
This is not the first instance of Trump expressing this controversial view. Earlier this year, he revived the idea of a U.S.-Canada merger following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation.
The latest comments come shortly after Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs against the United States in response to new tariffs imposed by Trump on Canadian imports, heightening tensions between the two countries.
