The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of University(ASUU) has suspended its nine-month-old strike.
ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, made the announcement during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja following the resolution of the Emergency National Executive Council(NEC) meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday night.
Ogunyemi, however, warned that the union would no hesitate without notice to resume the strike if the government fails to honour the agreement reached with the university lecturers.
The Union chairman, however, stated that the reopening of the schools, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, lies with the Federal Government and Senate.
ASUU had embarked on the indefinite strike on March 9, 2020 with a two-week warning leading to the comprehensive indefinite strike on March 23, 2020.
ASUU demanded that its members should be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) pending the approval of the proposed payment system – the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
