Anambra tightens security ahead of Soludo’s second term

 

Security has been beefed up across Anambra as Gov. Chukwuma Soludo prepares to be sworn in for a second term, with residents expressing optimism about his next four years in office.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a heavy deployment of security personnel at key locations in Awka, including Alex Ekwueme Square, the venue of the inauguration on Tuesday have been mounted.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and local vigilante groups were deployed at strategic points across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the security agencies were on full alert to ensure a peaceful ceremony.

Soludo and his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, are expected to take the oath of office amid tight security.

Residents who spoke with NAN expressed hope that the administration would consolidate on gains recorded in infrastructure, security and sanitation.

A trader at Eke Awka Market, Mr Ifeanyi Okeke, expressed optimism that the governor’s second term would consolidate the gains of his first tenure.

“We have seen improvements in road construction, security, and the cleanliness of the city. We expect more development and better opportunities in the next four years,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Ngozi Ezeani, a civil servant, expressed confidence in Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s leadership, noting that his policies have positively impacted residents.

She urged the government to prioritise job creation and youth empowerment programmes in the coming years.

Also, a student, Miss Chidinma Obi, said many youths were looking forward to more inclusive governance and greater opportunities for skills development.

“There is a general feeling of hope among youths. We want to see more opportunities for skills development and employment,” she said.

Some residents, however, called for greater attention to rural development and the rising cost of living.

A transport operator, Mr Emeka Nwafor, urged the government to address transportation challenges, ease economic hardship, and sustain ongoing projects.

Nwafor also emphasised the need to maintain security and ensure the timely completion of projects.

The inauguration is expected to attract dignitaries from across the country.
