The Ministry of Police Affairs, has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of peaceful area council elections.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Anuma Ogbonnaya, gave the reassurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
NAN reports that Ogbonnaya spoke during the monitoring of the election along with his team within the city centre in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
“You can see our directors and the team from the Ministry of Police Affairs here. We are monitoring the election, especially the conduct of police officers and other security agencies at polling units.
“We want to ensure that adequate security is provided and that no one acts contrary to the Electoral Act. That is why we are here. So far, so good in the areas we have visited; all security personnel are on duty and actively monitoring activities. There is no chaos; everywhere is calm.
“Although some officials have not yet arrived at certain polling units with materials, the police officers and other security agencies are performing well and maintaining order. People should be reassured. There is no chaos; everywhere is peaceful. The police officers and other security agencies are fully on top of the situation,” he said.
NAN reports that the polling units monitored by the permanent secretary included: Polling Units 16, AREA 8, City Centre AMAC, Polling Units 15, 072 and 073.
