Several people were reportedly trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in Lagos in the early hours of Monday, 27th October, 2025.

According to a situation report issued by Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo.

Adeseye said that the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was immediately dispatched to the scene after a distress call was received around 12:20 a.m.

“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which had reportedly been marked distressed before collapsing on the occupants,” the statement read.

So far, 15 people — comprising seven men, four women, and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations were still ongoing.

Building collapses have become a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, often linked to poor regulatory enforcement, use of substandard materials, and inadequate structural inspections.

One of the most notable incidents occurred in November 2021, when a high-rise luxury apartment under construction in Ikoyi collapsed, killing at least 42 people. More recently, in September 2025, a four-storey building under construction in Yaba also collapsed, leaving several people dead and trapped.
