The University of Lagos (UNILAG) made headlines this week as its Department of Mass Communication, proudly announced the historic graduation of 18 all-female first-class graduates, during the 55th Convocation ceremony held on Tuesday, 14th January 2025. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication and excellence of these young women in their academic pursuits.
Over the course of the three-day event, a total of 16,590 students are set to be awarded first degrees, diplomas, and postgraduate degrees. Among them, 9,865 students will receive undergraduate degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 will be honoured with postgraduate qualifications. Additionally, 66 students will graduate from the esteemed UNILAG Business School (ULBS).
UNILAG officials commended the graduates for their unwavering commitment to academic excellence despite the many challenges they encountered along the way. In sharing their experiences, some of the graduates reflected on the hurdles they faced while striving to balance their studies with various personal commitments.
Ms. Peace Onuoha, one of the standout graduates, shared that her initial aspiration was to study law, but she found new motivation in her commitment to achieving a first-class degree in Mass Communication. She said, “Despite facing intense pressure and balancing multiple jobs and projects, I managed to excel academically and even landed an internship at a multinational company”.
Another graduate, Ms. Temiloluwa Igbinlade, described the tough transition from secondary school to university, emphasizing the importance of faith and determination in overcoming the challenges that came with balancing her studies and other responsibilities. Ms. Eunice Obidi highlighted the critical role of discipline and prioritization in her academic journey. She attributed her exceptional performance to maintaining a strong focus and effective time management skills.
The accomplishments of these graduates not only set a benchmark within the university but also serve as an inspiration to future students, showcasing the power of perseverance and dedication in the pursuit of academic success.
