The federal government has approved the registration of Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as an academic union.

CONUA broke away from ASUU over disagreements on some issues in 2018.

The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige will present the certificate of registration to the faction on Tuesday.

CONUA is being led by ‘Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile -Ife.

The deputy director of press and public relations at the ministry of labour and employment, Oshundun Olajide announced the event in an invitation sent to journalists.

The event is scheduled to take place at the minister’s conference room in Abuja.

This move is believed to be an attempt to reduce influence of ASUU over the lingering strike that have grounded activities in Nigerian universities for over seven months.

ASUU has been on strike since February over refusal of the federal government to meet up with its demands.

Several meetings held with he federal government to resolve the crisis ended in stalemate.

Consequently, the federal government dragged the union to court over the matter.

On September 21, the national industrial court ordered ASUU to call off its strike and return to class rooms.

In responding to the order, the union filed an appeal seeking a stay of execution of the judgement.
