The United Kingdom has recorded its first death from the Omicron variant of Coronavirus.
The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this on Monday
“Sadly, at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with Omicron,” Johnson, who on Sunday warned of a “tidal wave” of infection from the mutation, told reporters.
UK had earlier imposed travel restrictions on countries in Africa including Nigeria to check the spread of the new variant.
Daily Mail reported that the UK was mulling lifting the travel bans and replacing them with mandatory tests for the fully vaccinated.
The Wolrd Health Organsiation described the Omicron as variant of concern and advised global leaders to take measures to curb the spread.
So far, Nigeria has recorded six cases of the variant but yet to report any fatality from the infection.
