The defeated presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, is said to be under investigation for allegedly prevailing on the United States to recognise him as the ‘authentic President’ of Nigeria.

The allegation, which Atiku has denied, surfaced earlier in the week. The former Vice President was said to have paid lobbyists $30,000 to convince Donald Trump not to recognise President Muhammdu Buhari as Nigeria’s president, and frustrate the scheduled May 29 inauguration of Buhari.

However, the matter has come to the knowledge of security agencies as report rife that Atiku is currently under investigation for alleged ‘treason’.

A source familiar with the situation told The Nation:  “The whole script is about subversive plot against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Security agencies picked up some intelligence and they are already investigating individuals and groups connected with it.

“It is not a case of crying wolf or an attempt to intimidate Atiku. Some clues were presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday. In fact, about eight ministers contributed to the issue to underscore the gravity of the case at hand.”
