Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, has urged Nigerians to shift their focus from just achieving personal success to making a difference in their communities.
He this appeal at an event organised by the Epe Club in honour of Alhaji Shakiru Seriki, a prominent politician and member of the Governance Advisory Council held at Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu emphasised that true leadership involves mentoring others and creating opportunities that outlive individual achievements.
The governor commended the club for honouring Alhaji Seriki, noting that his life exemplifies leadership, service, and commitment to community development.
“We must empower not just our families but our communities. We must be mentors and raise mentees who will continue the work of development. Baba Bamu and his contemporaries have mentored many people, and that is why they are celebrated today,” he said.
The governor urged young people to remain hopeful and proactive, focusing on opportunities rather than negativity.
He highlighted Nigeria’s growing adoption of technology and innovation, particularly among the youth, as a positive sign for the country’s future.
Sanwo-Olu further urged Nigerians to look beyond negative narratives, while reaffirming his confidence in Nigeria’s steady progress.
“This country is progressing. Our President is doing well, infrastructure is expanding, and many initiatives being implemented today will change lives. Young people must see opportunities, seize them, and contribute positively,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Chairman of the occasion and Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, described Seriki as an iconic figure who embodies industry, mentorship, and commitment to national development.
Alausa noted that celebrating individuals like Seriki strengthens national values, inspires future leaders, and promotes sustainable development.
He emphasised that true success was not just about personal achievements, but about contributing to commerce, education, and community progress.
The minister commended the Epe Club for providing guidance and role models.
He stressed the importance of shared responsibility among government, institutions, and communities in nurturing young people through education, values, and positive examples.
Earlier, Chief Olayemi Dada, President of Epe Club, praised Seriki as a leader who brings out the best in people, drives positive change, and develops communities.
He highlighted the Club’s community-focused initiatives, including providing bursaries to needy students, medical equipment to healthcare centres, and food aid to the needy.
He emphasised the club’s commitment to supporting communities across Epe Division.
