Two men, Haruna Sani and Garba Bashir, who allegedly burgled a shop and stole phones and accessories worth N5.5 million, were on Wednesday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court.

Sani, 25, and Bashir, 24, both residents of the Kawo area of Kaduna, are facing a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, burglary, and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants and others still at large committed the offences on June 11 at Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna.

He said that the defendants burgled the shop of one Nuhu Dauda and stole phones and accessories valued at N5.5 million.

Leo added that the defendants damaged the burglar-proof bars around the air-conditioner to gain access to the shop.

“The defendants came with sophisticated weapons, destroyed the burglar-proof bars, removed the air-conditioner, and entered through the opening to steal,” he said.

According to the prosecutor, the defendants were caught with the stolen items, while others involved escaped.

He said the offences contravened Sections 58, 270 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Kaduna State Government.

The case was adjourned until July 24 for hearing.
