An Area Court in Jos, on Wednesday sentenced a carpenter, Stephen Yusuf, to three months imprisonment for defrauding a businesswoman of the sum of N72,000.

The judge, Mrs Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Yusuf after he pleaded guilty to Criminal Breach of Trust and begged for leniency.

Bokkos, however, gave the convict an option to pay N20,,000 as fine or face three months imprisonment.

The judge also ordered him to pay the sum of N190,000 as compensation to the complainant or serve six months imprisonment in default.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Daniel Damulak, told the court that the case was reported at the ‘B’ Division Police Station on April 28, by Ms Phoebe Joel.

Damilak had alleged that the complainant gave the accused person the sum of N72,000 for the construction of a chicken and goat cage, but that the accused failed to carry out the job.

The prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation, the convict confessed to have converted the money to his personal use.

The offence, he said, contravened  the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
