The football community is mourning the recent loss of former Nigerian footballers Christian Chukwu and Charles Bassey, bringing the number of deceased members from Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad to nine.
Chukwu passed away in Enugu State, while Bassey died in Akwa Ibom State on Saturday, April 12, 2025. The 1980 AFCON victory marked a significant milestone in Nigerian football history, as it was the country’s first-ever title in the tournament.
Under the guidance of Brazilian coach Otto Glória, the Super Eagles showcased their prowess throughout the tournament, culminating in a decisive 3-0 victory against Algeria in the final at the National Stadium in Lagos.
This legendary team included several players who became national icons, each contributing to Nigeria’s proud footballing tradition. However, over the course of more than four decades, the passing of nine members from this revered squad has cast a shadow on their enduring legacy of triumph and inspiration. The list of the late players includes:
Best Ogedegbe (Goalkeeper) died in 2009 at age 55 after undergoing surgery. Moses Effiong (Forward) a key attacker. Okechukwu Isima (Defender) died in 2013 at the age of 56. Tunde Bamidele (Defender) passed away in 1997. Aloysius Atuegbu (Forward) – died in 2008 at age 55. Mudashiru Lawal (Midfielder) a midfield maestro, he passed away in 1991 at just 37. Martins Eyo (Forward) tragically shot dead in Lagos in 2002.
As the footballing world remembers these remarkable athletes, their contributions to the game will continue to inspire future generations. The impact of the 1980 AFCON winning squad remains a source of pride for Nigeria, and their legacy will forever be etched in the annals of football history.
