Family, friends, and colleagues of the late Success Izekor, a 38-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her husband, Kelvin Izekor, have gathered to demand justice.
The demonstration took place in Benin City, Edo State on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the Edo State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Leading the rally was Mrs. Iziegbe Ugiagbe, the victim’s sister, who voiced her fears that the case may not receive the attention it deserves. “We want a thorough investigation into this matter. My sister, who was heavily pregnant, was gruesomely murdered by her husband, and now his family is claiming he is mentally ill. This is unacceptable, and we demand justice for her and her unborn child,” Ugiagbe declared.
The protestors, predominantly women, called on the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that the investigation into the tragic incident is comprehensive and impartial. Ugiagbe raised concerns about potential interference, alleging that Kelvin Izekor’s family was attempting to sway the investigation in their favour.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, February 22, 2025, leaving the local community in shock, particularly because the couple was newly married. A neighbour, who requested to remain anonymous, expressed disbelief at the circumstances. “I can’t believe what I saw. Imagine being killed by your own husband. They were newlyweds, and nobody expected such a fate to befall her,” the neighbour commented.
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Kelvin Izekor in connection with the murder. Police spokesperson Moses Yamu stated that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, a move that may have averted an angry mob from taking matters into their own hands.
The community remains on edge as the demonstration underscores the pressing demand for justice for Success Izekor and her unborn child, with many hoping for a thorough investigation that holds the perpetrator accountable.
