On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Chief Edwin Kaigbodo Clark, former federal commissioner of information, who passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025.

His death comes just days after the loss of another political titan, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, highlighting a significant moment of grieving for Nigeria’s political landscape. Chief Clark was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, known for his fierce advocacy for the rights of the Niger Delta and his contributions as a lawyer, administrator, and freedom fighter.

His impressive career began in the Mid-Western Region, where he served as Commissioner for Education from 1968 to 1971, before taking up roles as Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in Bendel State from 1972 to 1975. At the federal level, Clark made significant impacts as Commissioner for Information in 1975 and later as a Senator from 1979 to 1983.

Throughout his life, he remained a passionate advocate for regional and national unity, leading prestigious organizations such as the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the South-South Peoples Assembly, and the Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF).

Clark’s tireless efforts in championing resource control, fiscal federalism, and the economic development of the oil-rich Niger Delta region earned him respect and recognition across Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical spectrum.

Friends, colleagues, and political leaders have begun to express their condolences, highlighting Clark’s legacy as a relentless advocate for justice and equality. As tributes continue to flood in, his impact on Nigerian politics and the fight for the rights of the Niger Delta are sure to be remembered for generations to come. The nation awaits further details from the family regarding his final rites and commemorations of his life and work.

The Senate also urged the federal government to establish a fitting monument in the country to commemorate Clark’s contributions. Additionally, the Senate resolved to send a delegation to express condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to the government and people of Delta State. This delegation will also participate in the burial ceremonies for the late Ijaw national leader.
