Social media websites Facebook and Instagram are experiencing technical problems Tuesday, with users in Nigeria and around the world unable to log in to or refresh their accounts.
Facebook users reported problems including being logged out — and when they attempted to log back in saw an error message such as, “Something went wrong. Please try again.”
Instagram users reported that their feed was not refreshing.
Both websites are owned by United States-based firm Meta.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone, confirmed the problem.
“We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Stone wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday.
As of 2023, Facebook was the largest social media platform globally with 3.03 billion monthly active users worldwide.
It was estimated that there were over 2 billion users of Instagram as of 2022.
The outage also extended to Meta’s Messaging platform and Threads, its Twitter-like app launched last year.
Many users initially feared their accounts were hacked, with fruitless efforts to reset passwords.
This is not the first time a Meta-owned platform has faced issues.
Facebook suffered a global outage in 2022, making many unable to watch videos or send messages.
Users of the blue platform in Nigeria took to X, formally known as Twitter, to share their concerns over the outage.
As of 5pm, “Facebook and Instagram”, and Meta founder “Mark Zuckerberg” were the top two trends on X in Nigeria.
