People in the sprawling city of Ota, Ogun State trooped out early morning today, to protest the high cost of living under the lingering tense economy in Nigeria.

Commercial activities were disrupted as people, majority of them youth, trooped out to register their displeasure with the running of the country which has been causing untold anguish to the people.

Prices of essential commodities have shot out of roofs and the effect has been too harsh on the people who seem not to see an end to the daily soaring cost of living.

The protesters took over the highways Friday, leading to traffic lull and causing disruptions to commercial activities in the axis, as demonstrators demand a quick fix of current situation from government.

Nigerians began to pass through harrowing living conditions caused by skyrocketing price of food and other pressing commodities, ostensively, engendered by the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy in May last year.

Prices of goods and services jumped as a result of the spiraling effect of the subsidy removal which birthed without adequate palliatives to assuage the pains

The ugly scenario was further worsened by the recent upsurge in insecurity, particularly in the south western part of the country, which has currently became the hotbed of crime.

Three monarchs were recently gunned down in Ekiti and Kwara States by abductors while several others are being waylaid on highways, almost on daily basis.

There are feelers that the country may witness pockets of protests by the people, should the present situation be allowed to fester.

However, the Federal Government has been making frantic moves to stem the tide to ensure that prices of essential commodities are brought within the reach of the masses.

An emergency meeting was summoned by the presidency, Thursday to found solutions to the myriad of problems besetting the nation.

Presidency seems to be working on the theory that the scarcity of food in the country is largely caused by deliberate decisions of some people to hoard circulation of food items into the market.

The DSS and the police, were assigned yesterday to look for warehouses where such commodities are being kept and sell them to the public at controlled price
