The National Universities Commission (NUC) has been directed to expedite action towards the completion of the Nuclear Energy Curriculum.
This is to enable Nigerian Universities and the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) as well as Polytechnics, begin the training of nuclear scientists and technologists locally.
Education Minister, Prof Tahir Mamman dropped this hint in a statement by the ministry’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Ben. Bem Goong.
The Minister spoke through the Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu, when he received in audience, the leadership of the NAEC, who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja.
The Minister indicated that the Federal Government will prioritize the award of scholarships to students wishing to study nuclear science and related courses within and outside the country.
Speaking earlier, the Director-General of the NAEC, Prof. Yusuf Ahmed, told the Minister that his Commission was currently partnering with Korea and China to meet its training needs for nuclear scientists, adding that there was the need for the country to look inward in this regard.
Ahmed emphasized that human capital development is critical for the country in the pursuit of a nuclear programme to meet her energy and pharmaceutical needs.
