FG Weakens ASUU, Registers Rival Union

The federal government has presented a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics( CONUA).The minister of labour ana productivity, Chris Ngige presented the certificate to CONUA on Tuesday.

In 2018, CONUA parted ways with ASUU over irreconcilable differences

The minister also presented a certificate of registration to the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA).

This move was taken as a measure to checkmate the Academic Staff Union of Universities over there protracted seven months strike.

The union are demanding for review of their salaries, autonomous for universities academics, among others.
Several meetings held with he federal government to resolve the crisis ended in stalemate.
Consequently, the federal government dragged the union to court over the matter.

On September 21, the national industrial court ordered ASUU to call off its strike and return to class rooms.
In responding to the order, the union filed an appeal seeking a stay of execution of the judgement.
