COVID-19: Nigeria Records One Death, 766 New Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) has confirmed that one more person has died of coronavirus while 766 new cases were recorded in the country.

The country public health agency announced this on Saturday, Janaury 8.

Lagos confirmed 261 infections; Anambra had the second-highest figure with 208 positive samples, followed by Rivers with 159 new cases.

Other states that reported new infections include Kaduna (42), Gombe (25), FCT (20), Osun (19), Oyo (14), Bauchi (5), Kano (5), Ekiti (4), Ebonyi (2) and Ogun (2).

The agency, however, said the cases reported include a backlog of infections from Anambra and Kaduna state.

One person died of COVID-19 complications on Saturday, bringing the country’s fatality toll to 3,071.

Overall, Lagos accounts for the highest cases of coronavirus deaths in Nigeria with 761 deaths, followed by Edo and the FCT, with 296 and 241 deaths, respectively.

Meanwhile, 595 new recoveries were recorded on Saturday, and according to the agency, the figure includes a backlog of 95 discharged patients from Kaduna state and 27 in Anambra.

A total of 247,775 COVID-19 infections have now been confirmed since the index case on February 27, 2020. Of the figures, 218,427 persons have been discharged, and 26,277 are currently active cases.
