Gunmen on Tuesday morning invaded the university of Abuja headquarters and abducted a professor of economics, Obansa Joseph, two of his children, and other people.
The university’s spokesperson, Habib Yakoob confirmed the incident, saying the victims are about six in number.
“Yes, I just confirmed that the information is true. Apart from the professor and his children, a non-academic staffer was also involved. They are about six victims,” Mr Yakoob said.
The identities of other victims are unclear at this time. Sources only identified them as ”Barrister John, Fidelis and Mallam Sambo.”
Mr. Yakoob said security operatives have been mobilized to secure their freedom.
Also confirming the sad development, Josephine Adeh , federal capital territory(FCT) police command said three other persons were abducted in the invasion,
“The CP noted that a combined team of the Police and personnel of the Nigerian Army 176 Guards Battalion were swiftly mobilized to the area to protect the citizens. Preliminary investigations however revealed that six (6) persons were allegedly abducted into the forest by the criminals on sighting the security operatives,” the statement read
This university also confirmed the attack in a terse statement via its Facebook page
“Suspected bandits attacked the staff quarters of the University in the early hours of today,” it read.
“Our safety officers, in conjunction with security personnel, mobilised to secure the quarters.
“We have report that four of our staff and their children were, nevertheless, abducted by the evil men.
“Efforts are being made to ensure their safe return. A sad day for us, indeed!”
Lately, the country has been witnessing a spike in crimes and other insecurity challenges including kidnapping.
A few weeks back, Chike Akunyili, the husband of Dora Akunyili, the former Director-General of the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) , was assassinated by gunmen in Anambra.
