Sounds of gunshots were heard at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Benin, Edo State on Saturday. The stampede led to the injuring of 10 people.

The rally was held to kick off campaign activities for Godwin Obaseki, governor of the state and candidate of the PDP in the September 19 governorship election.

The governor with the  national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, and other party leaders had visited the Oba of Benin palace. On their way back to Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium gunshots rented the air.

The PDP campaign train had reportedly clashed with some supporters of the opposing All Progressives Congress (APC) on their way to the stadium.

Chris Nehikaira of the PDP said, “We were by the palace gate, and when the governor’s entourage was coming, we still stood there and suddenly we started hearing sporadic gunshots.

“People started running, falling over each other, and about 10 people have sustained injuries, some elements loyal to the APC tried to disrupt the visit of the governor to the palace.”.

However, the police spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, he was yet to get details of how it happened.
