Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has been served a notice of impeachment by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

He was accused of gross misconduct. Ajayi had last week resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party but insisted on remaining in office.

Fourteen of the 26 members of the Assembly signed the notice on Tuesday, while nine voted against the decision.

At the Assembly premises, security was beefed up as the members were holding plenary.

The lawmakers, who resumed from recess on June 6, had placed advertorial calling on members to resume sitting.

However, to forestall his impeachment, Ajayi has approached an Abuja High Court where he filed a suit seeking to stop the impeachment proceeding and enforced his fundamental rights.

Other defendants in the suit were the Inspector General of Police, State Commissioner Of Police, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr David Oleyeloogun.
