Contrary to widespread report, the Nigeria Police Force said its officer who pushed Remo Stars Football Club captain, Kazeem Tiamiyu, to death on Saturday was not an officer of the Special Anti-robbery Squad, SARS.

Ogun State Police Commissioner (CP) Kenneth Ebrimson made this known while giving an update on the violent protest that was held on Monday by angry youths in Sagamu over Tiamiyu’s killing during which five people were feared dead with two of them believed to be policemen.
Ebrimson said: “Not a single bullet was fired by policemen. I am in Sagamu as I speak to you. We have since addressed the protesters and calmed them down. They dispersed quietly. What happened is that some miscreants tried to seize the opportunity of the protest to cause trouble in the state.
“They were the ones who tried to burn down the police station but we dispersed them. We did not fire any shot despite the provocation from them. We know some people were trying to push the police to the wall so that they will say see what has happened. That was why there was strict instruction on the men not to use force.
“We have taken control of the situation. The responsible protesters were addressed and assured that the team that arrested the footballer was already in detention and undergoing internal disciplinary action.
“We have said it before that the policemen that arrested him are not SARS operatives. They were of the Zonal Intervention Squad and have been arrested.”
Late Timiayu was a defender with Remo Stars and was arrested alongside his friend on the suspicion of being an internet fraudster.
Tragedy struck while they were being led to the station when the vehicle which the police used for the operation developed fault and was parked. The deceased player was reportedly with malice pushed out of the vehicle by an officer simply identified as Oyato and was crushed to death by an onrushing vehicle.
Oyato alongside the officers with him on patrol, were on illegal duty, the police have also said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this saying subject to the approval of the Inspector General of Police, Oyato has been dismissed.
“First, he embarked on an illegal duty; nobody sent him there and when he got there, he didn’t deem it fit to book his presence at the Sagamu Police Station.
“Also, the guy acted unprofessionally because if you arrest someone from such a long distance, why didn’t he handcuff him? So, his act of unprofessionalism led to the death of the man and that is why he will be charged to court,” Oyeyemi said.
