The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the dismissal of two judges, Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia, and Justice James Agbadu-Fishim to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Both are serving Federal judges.
While Ajumogobia is on the Federal High Court bench, Agbadu-Fishim is at the National Industrial Court.
According to a statement by the Director of Information of the NJC, Mr. Soji Oye, the NJC had in the interim placed the two judges on immediate suspension pending the confirmation of its recommendations by the president.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had over a year ago filed corruption charges against both judges before two different courts at the Ikeja division of Lagos High Court. Two months ago, Justice Raliat Adebiyi struck out the corruption charges against Agbadu-Fishim on the basis that the NJC is the authority to conduct investigations against judges. EFCC has already appealed the judgement.
Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia is still under trial before Justice Akeem Oshodi of the Ikeja division of the same court.
However, Oye said the NJC took the decision to dismiss the judges for various acts of misconduct at its 87th meeting which held under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen on Wednesday.
The two judges were pencilled down for dismissal following the findings of the investigative panels of the NJC which investigated the separate petitions sent against them by the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.
With the recommendations of the NJC to the President, the coast may now be clear for EFCC to prosecute the two for corruption.
