Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday shocked the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, and stakeholders as supporters of the governor disrupted the stakeholders meeting at the party’s Secretariat at ACME road, Ogba Lagos.
The unexpected happened to Tinubu at the APC Secretariat in ACME as the stakeholders meeting he called ahead of tomorrow’s governorship primary had to be cancelled.
Sources close to the leadership of the party said that Ambode had respectfully told Tinubu that he was not going to step down from the primaries after he had gone all the way. Ambode was alleged to have told the members of GAC that he was ready to participate in the primaries.
“This necessitated the stakeholders meeting today. 36 out of the 40 members of the state House of Assembly had endorsed Babajide Sanwo-Olu earlier in the day to further show the hand writing on the wall to Ambode. Not only that, Dr Hamzat was also prevailed on to step down and become deputy to Sanwo-Olu. All these were to further to force the hand of Ambode to step down.
The source continued: “Before the scheduled time, thousands of APC members had converged at the venue chanting pro-Ambode songs and calling Tinubu “Ole”.Tinubu had to turn back when he got the report of what happened.
The meeting was eventually called off.
Meanwhile, the earlier scheduled governorship primaries for Sunday has been postponed to Monday.
Sources disclosed that National Chairman of the Party, Adams Oshiomhole, announced that the governorship primaries for Lagos and Imo States have been shifted to Monday for logistic reasons.
The Akinwunmi Ambode Mandate Support Group on Saturday said Ambode was capable of winning the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State rescheduled for Monday.
The Director-General of AMSG, Mr Hakeem Sulaimon, at a news conference in Ikeja on Saturday, said Ambode was not worried about purported endorsement of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu ahead of the primary by some groups.
Sulaimon said that the governor had huge supporters across the state.
He said supporters of Ambode held meetings across all 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areasnon Friday and the support for the governor was overwhelming.
“There is huge affirmation and support for Ambode across the state, as stakeholders expressed readiness to work for his emergence as the governorship candidate of the APC and the governor of Lagos for a second term,”.
