Nigeria Becomes OPEC Secretary –General

BarkindoThe Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC) has appointed former group managing director of NNPC, Mohammed Barkindo as it next secretary-general.

The 13 member oil cartel made the announcement at its meeting in Vienna, Austria on Thursday, June 2

Barkindo takes over from Abdalla El- Badri from Libya.

OPEC has been looking for a replacement for El-Badr who had served out full term in 2013.

Badri was elected acting secretary general in December with a tenure expiration of July because the consensus of all members are required for appointment of a new secretary-general.

Barkindo was the GMD of NNPC from 2009 to 2010. He is also not new to to the new position as he had served as acting secretary general in 2006.

He was nominated by the Federal Government because of his qualification and experience in the oil sector.
