As the last quarter of the year 2015 begins, a period usually identified as ‘ember months’ quarter, the Federal Road Safety Commission in Akwa Ibom on Tuesday appealed to journalists to help publicise its safety campaign for motorists plying all routes in the state and across the Federation.
Mrs. Cecilia Alao, Commander of FRSC in the state, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to Mr. Patrick Albert, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in the state.
Alao said that the last four months of the year, tagged ember months, usually witness upsurge in vehicle movements, the number of travelers and consequent increase in road accidents.
She said, “As we embark on safety campaign and enlightenment, we need the cooperation of the media in the state.
“We need you to tell the people what we are doing, we sincerely need your collaboration.”
But she said the rate of road crashes in Akwa Ibom was not alarming, assuring that the command would keep it at the barest minimum.
While also thanking the union for the cooperation the commission has enjoyed from the body over the years, Alao also appreciated the Akwa Ibom Government for building good roads for motorists.
In his response, Albert promised to maintain the good working relationship between the union and FRSC.
The chairman noted that road safety was critical to the well-being of the society.
He appealed to the government to equip the commission for effective service delivery.
Albert said FRSC personnel conducted themselves in orderly manner while on routine checks and traffic controls.
He promised that the union and its members would join hands with the commission to enlighten the populace and motorists during the Ember months.
