The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the corruption mess that characterised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration was so pervasive that until it is cleaned, Nigeria will not be able to realise its potentials.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, ‘’Those who would rather give comfort to the looters by dismissing the media exposure of looting cases as mere hell-raising should realise that no sane person can be silent in the face of what is unfolding as the worst cases of brazen stealing of public funds in Nigeria’s history.”
‘’On August 16, 2015, we listed some instances of the breathtaking looting of the treasury by some officials of the immediate past administration. Today, we bring three more heart-rending cases to the attention of Nigerians. We will not relent until closure has been brought to this issue.
“A mind-shattering $2.2 billion arms scandal; a $6.9 million fraud by the chief security officer (CSO) to President Jonathan, committed under the guise of buying three mobile stages for the President; a N2.5 billion scam involving the rent of house boats.
‘’While those charged with handling these cases are finalising the details of bringing the suspects to justice, our immediate concern is the attempt by the PDP, under whose umbrella the looting took place, to blame the Buhari Administration for the mess and then infer that things have been worse in Nigeria in the past three months under the APC-led Federal Government than in the 16 years under the PDP. This is totally provocative, shameless and uncharitable.
‘’They say we are yet to fulfil our campaign promises to Nigeria, but they have forgotten that if only the PDP/Jonathan Administration had not stolen Nigeria blind, there would have been more than enough money to give school children in Nigeria not just one but three meals a day and even pay N5,000 to 50 million most vulnerable Nigerians, not just the 25 million we promised in our manifesto.”
…APC govs brainstorm on economic recovery
The political atmosphere of the land of beauty was last Thursday electrified as All Progressives Congress (APC) governors popularly called the Progressives Governors stormed the ancient city of Yola, Adamawa State to observe the maiden meeting of the Governors Forum where important national issues were discussed.
Sequel to the August meeting, hundreds of youths have been mobilized by Adamawa State government to sanitise Yola, and its environs in honour of the important guests and the relevance of the event at hand.
The sanitation exercise which started on Tuesday saw the youths sweeping major streets that link Yola International Airport with the Government House and also the roads that link Government House to the Palace of Lamido of Adamawa.
Also, potholes in the state capital have been marked for refilling to manage the potholed ridden roads as sidewalks are being repainted while APC flags were erected at strategic places.
With the sanitation exercise, the state capital witnessed a rapid facelift during the two days it lasted making the city assume a new serenity preparatory to Thursday’s event.
The meeting was attended by governors of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha; Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar; Kebbi State, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello; Jigawa State, Abubakar Badaru and Sokoto State Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Other governors of Kaduna, Edo, Oyo, Ogun, Plateau, Benue, Bauchi, Kwara, Nasarawa and Kano states were represented by their deputies.
Preparatory to the meeting, the Yola International Airport became a beehive of activities as the governors started arriving the state since Wednesday evening and the flow continued till Thursday morning with the arrival of the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha.
Immediately Okorocha arrived, the governors in a long convoy paid a courtesy call on the premiere traditional ruler and Lamido of Adamawa where they received royal blessings from the paramount traditional ruler.
Apparently happy with the feat the APC has started making in the polity, Lamido was full of blessings for the party and expressed optimism that they will revive the economy if the giant leap it recorded within the short period of time it has been in power is anything to go by.
Lamido, who observed the stream of developmental strides being instituted, noted with joy the rapid progress witnessed in the power sector since the coming of the APC administration noting that it is an indication of purposeful leadership.
He noted that with the tempo, very soon the economy will receive a boost as the success in the power sector has the tendency of triggering a concomitant massive economic rejuvenation in the nation.
Responding to Lamido’s remark, the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Zamfara State Abdul’Aziz Yari re-echoed the commitment of the progressives governors in restoring the lost glory to governance.
He noted that Nigerians have so far started to witness rapid developmental strides since the coming of the APC administration.
Also reiterating the position of the governor of Zamfara State, Okorocha noted that the main purpose of the meeting was to articulate a blueprint that will lead to massive job opportunities in the land.
He said that with the far-reaching measures taken by the party, the masses have a renewed hope, trust and confidence in their leaders.
He noted that in order to enhance competition among APC governors, the meeting would revolve across the APC states on monthly basis in order to allow the governors compare notes and share thoughts in the exercise of peer review mechanism which is a serious ingredient for development in a democratic setting.
Okorocha who was also full of accolades for Adamawa State Governor Muhammadu Bindow Jibrilla, noted that the governor has performed remarkably especially in entrenching peace in the state, adding that the strides so far taken by the governor in housing projects and roads rehabilitation are commendable.
The governor who advocated a robust working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of governments in the state, noted that the frosty relationship witnessed hitherto has caused the state too much.
“This time, we hope for a better relationship between the governor and the state lawmakers,” he noted.
He added that providing employment will solve the raging poverty in the country and will lead to a lasting peace.
The Chairman of the forum further noted that poverty is a challenge that the APC is concerned about tackling and commended Jibrilla for his record of achievements within his three months as the Chief Executive of Adamawa State.
Okorocha added that the forum has resolved to be meeting from state to state to enable the governors see for themselves what they are doing in their various states and to fashion out modalities of how to strengthen developmental strides in their states.
According to him, the forum is poised to employ peer review mechanism, where the state governors compare notes of achievements that they have made in their respective states.
Noting the impact being made by President Muhammadu Buhari in rejuvenating Nigeria’s comatose economy, the forum pledged total support and commitment to his leadership, noting that his leadership has reawakened the confidence of Nigerians in governance, and stabilised the country within the last 90 days of its existence.
Recognizing the developmental strides being put in place by the host governor, Okorocha appealed for the support of the people for the governor noting that within a short time of the administration in the state, noticeable changes have begun to take effect.
He noted that the governor has done much in the areas of roads construction and the housing sector with 300 housing unit scheme and that such feat by any standard was remarkable.
According to him, despite all the hullabaloo stirred by the opposition, the people were beginning to have confidence again in governance because of the stability the APC-led government has brought since coming into power.
The forum also threw its weight behind the party so as to ensure that it emerges victorious in other upcoming polls.
“We also stated the APC Governors Forum will work with the party, the APC, to strengthen the party and also make sure it becomes victorious in all elections coming up very soon,” Okorocha said.
The governors observed a minute silence in honour of the late deputy Governor of Borno State who died during an official assignment noting that Nigeria has lost an illustrious son who sacrificed his life to ensure the development of the country.
Highlights of the meeting was a visit to one of the IDP camps in the state which allowed the governors to get firsthand information about the plight of the IDPs with a promise to them that the APC government will in no time bring an end to the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency bedeviling the North East geo-political zone.
