The United States has condemned the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria vowing to crush the terrorist group; it says it is determined to find and deal with the insurgents wherever they may be.
The activities of Boko Haram were described as lacking human dignity and sympathy, as such, the US government will crush the insurgents: “We are not afraid of you. You lack human dignity and we are coming to get you.”
The US congressional delegation currently touring Nigeria assured that President Barack Obama would work with the Federal Government to defeat the insurgents.
Mr Darrell Issa, Mrs Sheila Jackson Lee and Mr Blake Farenthold, leaders of the US congressional delegation during a press conference organised in Abuja Tuesday to discuss regional security, counterterrorism, Boko Haram and kidnapped victims, the representatives said that the activities of Boko Haram are seriously ruining the image of Nigeria in the international community.
During President Muhammadu Buhari’s historic visit to Washington D.C, he reiterated his commitment to crush Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria.
Speaking during the press conference, a member of the delegation, Mr Darrel Edward stated that “the world is cheering Nigeria following President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the US which made a very significant statement on his efforts and willingness to fight the insurgents which has further created a fresh relationship between the US and Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.
Edward said, “The activities of Boko Haram are seriously ruining the image of Nigeria in the international community. When people think of Nigeria, they don’t think about the oil wealth of the country; rather, they think of Boko Haram.”
On the lifting of arms embargo on Nigeria, Issa said United States is not putting human rights above human life and that Nigeria does not lack the minimal weapons to fight Boko Haram.
Rather, what they lack is the technicalities to use the weapons and that is the area the US would be intervening until the issues of human rights infringement are addressed.
He said, “I want to make one thing extremely clear, there is a report about the candid discussion of the Leahy amendment; nothing under current US laws prevents full cooperation and technical support, training for the military and for all the departments of government. Those are on and will continue.’’
