The United States has urged Nigeria to shift focus from oil to non-oil exports if the country must maximise profits from its resources and enjoy a stable economy.
Prof. Ade Adefuye, Nigeria’s Ambassador and Head of Mission in the United States, who disclosed the recommendation Sunday evening, also listed some of the changes the US authorities expect to see in Nigeria henceforth.
Speaking with journalists at the Embassy of Nigeria Building in Washington DC shortly before the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari, Adefuye listed one of the priority areas to include power supply
President Buhari is currently on a four-day official visit to the country.
The ambassador said, “America will want to see a shift of the emphasis from oil to non oil export, agriculture, power, infrastructure and solid materials and all the things that will help Nigeria to diversify.”
He said that the US would also want to see a world where there would be more consultations than confrontations.
Adefuye noted that since that was also the objective of Nigeria, the two countries complement each other.
