Election into the Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) yesterday (Thursday) turned into a bloody affair.
A faction of the had two weeks ago announced the suspension of the incumbent chairman, Dr. Ike Okwesili, for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
One of the Deputy Vice-Chairman Enugu East, Dr Kinsley Ugwuonye, was then named as acting chairman.
However, some members who gathered at the Michael Okpara Square for the Annual General Meeting and the election of new executive of the association for the next two years, were seriously injured by thugs who invaded the venue.
The thugs invaded the venue with dangerous weapons while voting was going on. They destroyed chairs, tables, and canopies as well as everything on sight upturning ballot boxes. They descended on members of the electoral committee leading to all running for cover.
Dr Ike Okwesili and some others were beaten and wounded.
