INEC Declares Diri Douye Governor of Bayelsa Amidst Contention

Following a very controversial judgement by the Supreme Court over the Bayelsa State gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission went ahead Friday to declare Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner of the November sixteenth 2019 Governorship election in Bayelsa State.

The Chairman of the Commission Professor Mahmood Yakubu made the declaration at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

This comes a day after the Supreme Court unanimously voided the election of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Candidate David Lyon over forgery committed by the deputy governorship candidate.

The Supreme Court judgement means that the APC candidates were deemed not to have participated in the election.

The INEC boss announced that the PDP Candidate scored one hundred and forty three thousand, one hundred and seventy two votes getting more than twenty five percent of the lawful votes caste in all the eight local government.

The total votes cast in the election now stands at one hundred and forty six thousand nine hundred and ninety nine.

The tenure of the incumbent governor Seriake Dickson ends at Friday midnight.

INEC’s announcement came in the midst of the cloud of uncertainty which arose from the Thursday Supreme Court judgement.
