Three persons were on Saturday evening shot dead by gunmen in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The gunmen injured many in a bid to escape after shooting a personal assistant of a member of the state House of Assembly.
They robbed the lawmaker’s aide of an undisclosed amount of money he reportedly withdrew for his boss from a bank in the state capital.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, numbering four, also killed a tricycle operator at MCC Junction and a passerby at Tetlow Road.
The hoodlums killed another person at another street before making their way out of the town.
The robbers were said to have trailed the lawmaker’s aide to the point where they collected the money from him.
“The armed men attacked the lawmaker’s personal assistant, who was driving a white Hilux vehicle. They got hold of the bag with the money. The aide tried to resist them, but they shot him in his hand,” the source said.
He said the fleeing gunmen while escaping, shot sporadically into the air.
When our correspondent visited the scene of the robbery, two lifeless bodies were seen, with a heavy presence of policemen.
When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident but said he had yet to receive the full details officially.
He, however, said the police were on top of the situation.
