NPFL Round Up- Abia Warriors Crumble At Home To Sunshine as Shooting Stars Fall in Uyo

shooting starsSunshine Stars of Akure handed a 2-1 shocker to Abia Warriors in Umuahia on Sunday via a 90th minute strike by substitute Dele Olorundare. The loss for the Abia was their first at the Umuahia Township Stadium this season.

The result meant that the Warriors and Rivers United missed the chance to overtake Rangers at the top of the league table with the Rivers side also beaten in their matchday 19 fixture.

A win for any of the teams could have seen them move to the top after Rangers had been held to a draw by Heartland in Enugu on Friday.

In Umuahia, Sunshine Stars opened scoring in the added time of the first half through Rasaq Adegbite according to website of the League Management Company. They held onto their lead until the 78th minute when substitute Obinna Nwaimo drew level for the home side. But when the game was looking to ended in a draw Olorundare then hit the winner leaving the home fans sad.

Abia coach, Kennedy Boboye, was distraught after the game.

He told the LMC, “It’s sad for me. I just pray we can get a good result elsewhere. I feel very sad that we lost to a team like this. They were not fantastic. The problem we had is that my boys didn’t play to instructions.

“The fans too should be patient. It didn’t work for us today. It could work tomorrow.”

Solomon Ogbeide of Sunshine claimed the win was not a surprise to him.

“It just shows our efforts are beginning to pay off. We worked hard for it. And it showed.

“The boys are beginning to adapt. We came here for a win and we got it,” Ogbeide said.

In the other game Lobi Stars defeated Rivers United 1-0 in Makurdi. Sunday Akeleche gave Lobi the winner from the spot in the 67th minute after the visitors’ captain, Austine Festus, handled the ball inside the box.

At the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo Shooting Stars whose coach resigned last week continued their poor season’s form falling by 2-0 to Akwa United. It was Friday Ubong who scored the opening goal the eighth minute while Cyril Olisema slipped in the second.

Warri Wolves beat El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0 with Kelvin Itoya grabbing a brace.
