A group of unidentified gunmen have stormed Allawa, a village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State to unleash terror on the community, killing the district Head of the village, a police inspector and 33 others.
The police and sources in the community said the gunmen are suspected to be cattle rustlers in Shiroro Local Government Area of the State.
The attackers were said to be Fulani herdsmen armed with machine guns and other weapons,.
The operation was said to have lasted about two hours during which the attackers set more than 25 houses ablaze and injured many.
Many of the villagers were said to have been displaced as a result of the incident.
ASP Bala Elkana, Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State who confirmed the incident, said the command had yet to confirm the casualty figure, but said a policeman was among those killed and the incident occurred on Tuesday night.
The Police PRO said the security agencies could not respond on time due to lack of communication between Allawa and other parts of the state.
Elkana said, “The Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Marafa, has sent the Divisional Police Officer in Kagara and the Police Area Commander in Minna to the troubled village to assess the situation and bring back a report.”
