The Lagos State government on Sunday approved a 7-day period during which any traffic offender who flouts any section of the 2012 Lagos Road Traffic Law would be able to pay the fine at his convenience.
The regime was a sharp contrast to the approach adopted by the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola when vehicles were impounded on the spot of enforcement and offenders paid demurrhage on every day their vehicle spent in the state’s custody.
The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Bashir Braimah, disclosed at the weekend when the agency started enforcing the new approach that allows LASTMA operatives to fine traffic offenders on the spot with a directive to pay in seven days.
Speaking on the new approach, the general manager explained that the exercise was the first after the directive of the state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on LASTMA’s approach of impounding the offenders’ vehicles soon after booking.
