Muazu gave the assurance at the weekend during the closing ceremony of 2 Division Nigerian Army Inter Brigade Competition held in Akure, Ondo State capital.
The army commander who said the major challenge facing the nation today is insurgency in the North East of the country, assured that the challenge is coming to an end soon.
He said that Boko Haram is now changing tactics by hitting soft targets which according to him, indicates that their days are numbered.
He explained that: “For the war against insurgency, we must put focus on how to end it very soon. The Boko Haram menace, to me, all what they are doing now is hitting soft targets which indicates that their days are numbered.
“That is why they go for soft target. Today I can comfortably tell you that because I just came back from North East, they cannot and I repeat that they cannot take any offensive attack against Nigerian forces, that one is for sure.
“They will keep on going for soft targets, but I want to assure Nigerians that soft targets too will soon end.
“Indeed there are other challenges ranging from kidnapping, oil bunkering and what have you, but I am sure that all these challenges are coming to an end.”
Muazu further said that the army will not do anything that would affect Nigerians negatively in any way.
“We are looking forward to an army that is responsive to the society, that would respond to the demands and needs of our people,” he stated.
He therefore appealed to the people to give them the necessary support in terms of intelligence and information about how the insurgents prepare their bombs.
“I want to remind all Nigerians that this preparation and the rest are not carried out in the open, are carried out in houses and hidden places. So every Nigerian must key into how we can win the battle against insurgency in the North East. I think with that support, we are going to make it”.
In his remarks, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko promised that the state will continue to support the activities of the Nigerian army.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Aderotimi Adelola noted that the competition will improve the capability of the army to be combat ready to surmount the security challenges presently confronting the country.
The 2 Division Nigerian Army Inter Brigade Competition comprises five events which include, Weapons Handling, Physical Fitness and Obstacles Crossing, Drill and Map Reading, is to improve leadership traits, organizational ability, use of initiative and to promote esprit de corps by personnel.
No Borno LGA is under Boko Haram control – Army
The 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri Sunday denied rumours that some local government areas, recently said to have been liberated from the Boko Haram are still under the control of the insurgents.
This rebuttal was made by the spokesman of 7 Division, Colonel Tukur Gusau, when he paraded some items and arms recovered from the Boko Haram terrorists by soldiers that recaptured Dikwa town, the headquarters of Dikwa local government.
“Our men are currently in Dikwa and are in full control of the town. On our way to recapturing Dikwa, we met some resistance, where we returned fire killing 20 members of the insurgents.”
Colonel Gusau said items recovered from the insurgents in the Dikwa operations include multi-purpose machine gun, 6 AK 47 riffles, a sniper’s rifle accessories, with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) among other ammunitions.
Speaking on the earlier claims that the Nigerian army have liberated Dikwa town before the election, he said, “This is the first time that Nigerians are on ground in Dikwa since the capturing of Dikwa by the insurgents.”
According to him, “In the process of recapturing Dikwa, our troops destroyed five vehicles laden with IEDs alongside some motorcycles.”
Army kills terrorists on Dikwa-Maiduguri road
In compliance with the directive of Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, Nigerian troops have increased the tempo of their offensive as they killed many terrorists during a recent combat operation along Dikwa-Maiduguri Road in Borno State.
Recall that Buratai while renaming the counter-insurgency operation “Operaton Zaman Lafiya Dole,” had urged the troops not to wait for Boko Haram to attack but to take the battle to the insurgents’ hideouts.
Through a combine operation involving the ground troops and airforce, the Nigerian military dealt devastating blow on the terrorists who could not escape during the encounter.
Some of the items recovered from the terrorists included vehicles heavily laden with Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs), motorcycles, trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns, anti-aircraft gun, general purpose machine gun, gunbox of anti-aircraft, gun ammunition and rifles.
While reluctant to provide the exact figure of casualty from the operation, the spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani Usman Kukasheka confirmed that recent military operations against the terrorists have been very successful as the terrorists are on the run.
Colonel Kukasheka said that in one of the recent operations, the military attacked terrorists’ logistics base where IED was planted with connected wires traced to a kingpin’s residence.
He said due to recent concerted efforts, roads and towns hitherto held by Boko Haram terrorists and laced with mines such as Biu-Buni Yadi-Damaturu and Biu-Sabon Gari-Damboa roads were liberated and cleared of mines and made safe for public usage.
