The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), was Friday thrown into chaos as two Acting Directors-General lay-claims to being the authentic choice of the presidency for the headship f the organization.
Nigerian Current gathered that staff and visitors at the Burma road, Apapa headquarters of the agency were left speechless when one of the Executive Directors, Mr. Haruna Babajauro (Finance and Admin), “openly” challenged the incumbent Acting Director-General, Mr. Callistus Obi.
Obi who was until Wednesday the agency’s Executive Director, Maritime and Labour Safety, took over from the sacked NIMASA helmsman, Patrick Akpobolokemi, following a presidential order that he hands over to the most senior staffer pending the appointment of a substantive DG.
In what clearly appears like a power play, Babajauro appeared on the scene, Friday, brandishing a letter from the Head of Service of the Federation, asking him to assume temporary headship of NIMASA.
Industry watchers who spoke to our correspondent on the issue under anonymity have however posited that if Babajauro’s claim is genuine, the development may have demonstrated apparent double standards by the Federal Government.
